There's always an element of the left claiming that the United States has always been fascist. This plays into the hands of the fascists, because the backbone of their political philosophy is that Might Makes Right and that this has always been true. They refuse to admit that there was ever a time and place where government was just, especially not here in America. And I'll agree that the U.S. has never been truly just for everyone. It's been, at best, fitfully in pursuit of justice, if you happened to be in the right place at the right time (and the right color and gender). Yeah, the Nazis modeled their laws on the Jim Crow South and that's who we were and are, but is that all we can aspire to? I hope not. I believe in more than that. I was brought up to believe in more than that by this very country. And I think we can do better. That's the most important difference between us and the fascists in this country: They sincerely believe people are not better than they are. I believe they -- we -- are.
